Electronic Prescribing
On a Wednesday the practice currently closes for 2 hours for staff training. This week we were updated about local plans and progress towards the Electronic Prescribing Service. We are currently at the first stage and about to move to the second stage.
First Stage
Over the past year or so, you may have noticed that your prescription form has had a barcode printed on it. This means that it was produced using the first stage of the new Electronic Prescription Service.
Second Stage
Now, the Electronic Prescribing Service is moving to the next stage of the service where there is less need for you to receive a paper prescription – unless you want one.
At first, if you want the practice to send your prescription electronically, you must choose, or ‘nominate’, a place to receive your electronic prescriptions. This could be any pharmacy, for example, you could choose to nominate a place that is convenient to where you live, work or shop.
Nomination works in a similar way to a prescription collection service where the pharmacy collects your prescription for you – instead of you having to collect it from the practice. The main difference with nomination is that your prescription will be sent electronically and you don’t have to nominate a place that is close to your practice. To order a repeat prescription you will do it the same way as you currently do it; via the phone, via the internet, via paper and reception or asking your nominated pharmacy to collect it. But you won't need to collect the paper prescription and take it manually to a pharmacy - it will be done electronically for you - easy!

I think this is going to be good for the practice because it will massively reduce the workload in managing repeat prescriptions and good for patients as it will mean it is easier and more convenient to order repeat prescriptions. The proposed start date is in December this year.
I can't wait for the Stage Two to go live!
